Star Wars Spaceships Inspired Type – 36 Days of Type – edition 04
For the 4th edition of 36 Days of Type I decided to create a consistent alphabet, instead of focusing on each letter separately. It had to be something I loved and I immediately thought of Star Wars spaceships. Some of them were named after letters (x-wing, y-wing, etc), but turns out there were fewer than I thought that actually looked like the letters they were named after. But then it hit me: “The Millennium Falcon looks like a Q seen from above, with some special modifications… The front view of the Tie-fighter looks like an H… And the Death Star looks like an O.” I could work with that! So I started searching the entire Star Wars universe for spaceships in order to find similarities between them and the letters and numbers I needed. Then I redesigned all the ships to fit the purpose and style intended. For some of them I just couldn’t find a base reference, so I designed them from scratch, using bits and pieces from the other ships. I hope you like the result as much as I enjoyed doing it!
“36 Days of Type is a project that invites designers, illustrators, and graphic artists to express their particular view on letters and numbers of our alphabet. 36 days of restless creativity, where participants are challenged to design a letter or number each day, resulting in the representation of the same symbol from many different perspectives. It’s a project that aims to be a space for creation around typography and its endless graphic possibilities.”
